The Weird Al Yankovic biopic had been announced earlier this year as a straight-to-streaming exclusive coming to The Roku Channel, but from the looks of it, like many of Weird Al’s songs, this parody goes beyond what this genius’ real-life story had to offer. Under the premise “The world belongs to the weird,” the film looks to tell Al’s story with a few bombastic exaggerations that see Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) become a key player and romantic partner to Weird Al’s rise to stardom, with all the usual trappings of a true rockstar.

Suffice to say, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is a satirical take on the musician’s bio, painting a wild lifestyle filled with tons of alcohol, sex, drugs, and rock & roll. This is quite contrary to Weird Al’s public image, seeing as he’s always claimed his religious upbringing has kept him abstinent from any substances. The trailer hilariously shows Al’s efforts to be as weird as he can, despite his parents’ best efforts against it, and does a great job at depicting his eureka moments when he came up with his first big hit “My Bologna,” a parody of the Knack’s popular single 1979 single “My Sharona.”
Among the other hit singles featured in the trailer is Weird Al’s spin on the classic “I Love Rocky Road," as well as a fun twist on the origins of his “Like A Surgeon” parody of Madonna. Overall, the portrayal of Weird Al’s career as the typical struggling rockstar looks incredibly well framed, with a couple of nods to some of his most popular songs like “Amish Paradise” being thrown in there.
While Radcliffe has been rumored to be in contention to become the MCU’s Wolverine, the actor has said playing Weird Al Yankovic is one of the most fun jobs he’s ever had, which goes a long way coming from Harry Potter himself. The curly afro suits Radcliffe perfectly, and he truly does resemble Weird Al in his younger “Another One Rides the Bus” days, so it’s easier to forgive the obvious height difference between parody Weird Al.
This is far from being Weird Al Yankovic’s first foray into cinema, but seeing the artist’s idiosyncratic humor in a feature-length film promises to be quite the joyride for comedy fans when it screens for the first time at the Toronto International Film Festival next week.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will premiere on The Roku Channel on November 4, 2022.
